Infectious Diseases and Health Equity

Our department has been actively engaged in a range of research projects focused on infectious diseases and health equity, aligning with global health priorities to address disparities in healthcare access and outcomes. These projects aim to improve health equity and community resilience, particularly in the areas of infectious disease prevention, management of co-morbidities, health disparities among vulnerable populations, and the intersection of infectious diseases with social determinants of health. In recent years, the Department has collaborated with the Department of Microbiology, School of Public Health, Department of Pharmacology and Pharmacy, Department of Social Work, Department of Surgery, and Musketeers Foundation Institute of Data Science to leverage big data and innovative approaches to tackle population-level health challenges.

Our team has conducted research in partnership with the Hospital Authority, non-governmental organizations, private healthcare providers, community centers, and academic institutions across Hong Kong to advance health equity in infectious disease screening, diagnosis, and management. We have identified key barriers and facilitators to healthcare access, as well as strategies to promote equitable health outcomes for marginalized populations. Additionally, we have been working with the World Health Organization to contribute to the development of global guidelines for equitable health interventions in infectious disease control. Our international collaborations extend to universities and research institutions in the Western regions (United Kingdom, America) and Asia-Pacific region (Australia, Singapore, and Mainland China), focusing on projects related to COVID-19, hepatitis infection, HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, vaccine equity, antimicrobial resistance, and the impact of social inequalities on infectious disease outcomes. In addition to these efforts, we are pioneering studies on AI-powered, non-invasive risk screening tools for infectious diseases, aiming to enhance early detection and precise intervention. We are also actively involved in research on preventive care for end-stage diseases, including cancer outcomes after infection, with a focus on reducing health disparities and improving quality of life for patients through innovative, equitable, and accessible healthcare solutions. Moving forward, our team shall work on improving healthcare access amongst the ethnic minorities in Hong Kong and research on directions in interprofessional collaborations to attain health equity across the whole population."
